The trucking industry or the logistics industry as it is sometimes called is a very essential part of today's society. Almost all countries in the world
have a trucking industry that helps deliver goods like appliances, cars and other necessities to a certain place in the shortest time possible. A commercial motor
vehicle or a truck as it is often referred to, is the most important aspect in the trucking industry. Another important aspect of the trucking industry is the CMV or truck
operator. A truck operator before was usually a male, but today, there are also some female truck operators. The reason for a mostly male population of truck drivers
is because of the hazard and the manual labor involved and also because of the lifestyle. Most truck drivers spend a lot of time away from their families or home and
a day in the life of a trucker would involve more than eight hours of driving non stop. But that would depend on the situation and usually on the company that the
trucker works for.
Speaking of hazards, it is said that a truck driver, especially one who drives 18 wheelers or other very large or heavy duty trucks, are five
times more likely to be involved in an accident while on the job than any other worker in a different job. That's why there are laws in the United States that insists
upon truck drivers to work for only a set of hours - which is known as the hours of service - in order to prevent having drivers that are overworked and very tired so
that these truck operators can concentrate more on driving, thus preventing accidents from happening in the long run.
As the years go by, there is also an
increasing need in goods and services. With the baby boomer generation also comes more demands, thus more supply is needed. But, since a job as a truck driver is
generally not preferred because of the long hours and hard manual labor involved, more and more truck operators are retiring early, switching to another job with
better pay and quitting altogether. But even if the truck operators are declining in number, the need for truck drivers is still increasing. There is an unmet demand of
truck drivers and less and less people are applying for a job as a truck driver. But because there is a need for new truck operators, more companies are offering more
perks like satellite television or radio to keep a trucker entertained whenever there is a free time. Not only that but other perks like a GPS system (which lets truckers
have an in depth guide to where they're going instead of using an ordinary paper map), cell phone and inter net are also included. So truckers can still communicate
with their employers and families despite the distance. All in all, a truck driver or CMV operator is as essential as the truck itself. A truck and a driver go hand in hand
in order to keep the trucking industry on track.
